Ain't nobody got time for that !

March 4, 2018

Hello my lovelies !

Do you often find yourself opening the fridge at the end of the week to find unopened bags of foods that went past the expiration date ? How did you let that happen ? Well, every evening of the week most of us face the same dilemma : spend 30+ min in the kitchen or 5 min and 20 £ on a food delivery application. And most of us would usually go for the easiest option.

It is understandable. We get caught up in the daily grind and end up making the wrong food choices despite having the best intentions. The lack of time seems to be our biggest blocker. We all have the same amount of time in a day but what we do with it is totally up to us.

Meal prep has been around in the fitness industry for decades. However, you don’t have to be an athlete to plan out your food choices. Knowing exactly what is on your plate can help you keep your health and waistline in check.

But first what are some of the benefits of meal prepping ?

  • No more cheating : You won't be tempted to stop at your local take-away restaurant.

  • More variety : We tend to always go for the same types of foods because they are safe and easy to prepare. However, by doing so, we risk creating nutrient deficiencies. With meal prep as it gets easier with time, you will feel more incline to try new foods.

  • No more waste : It might not happen overnight but after a few weeks into meal prep, grocery shopping will be a piece of cake and you won't give in to impulse buying anymore.

  • Saving on meal delivery :  The amazing holiday you could afford at the end of the year buy giving up just one weekly take-away  (1,040 £ exactly)

  • Healthier/ cleaner diet : I cannot stress enough the importance of cooking from scratch. Preservatives, saturated fats,  nutrient density are things you would not need to worry about when cooking from scratch.

  • More time and less stress : On top of having more time for yourself, meal prepping can create a sense of control and confidence in your ability to look after yourself which will ultimately will bring more peace into your life.

Now let's get practical. How do you meal prep like a pro ?

  1. Start making a plan of what you would like to eat. Keep it simple ( leave the crispy duck with chilli plum sauce for the weekend). Also think of a rainbow when making your grocery list. Every color found in food has a unique nutritional value.  Save your list somewhere so you can  easily go back to it after a few weeks. 2. Chop it like it's hot ( no joke, this brand sells cool kitchen supplies here )! Listen to your best Spotify playlist on Sunday afternoon and get peeling, cutting, dicing. It should not take more than an hour. Only prep the basic components such as broccoli, carrots, onions etc to make your life easier on weekdays and to keep everything fresh. Any leftovers of the week will make the perfect quiche for a lazy Sunday brunch with friends.

  3. Keep your chopped foods in containers. My advice would be to invest in Glasslock containers as they are BPA-free (BPA are harmful chemicals found in plastic containers) and have a shock resistance 3 to 5 times higher than normal glass. For salads and overnight oats, Mason jars  seem to be the new trend so get creative !

  4. Cook some of your meals in advance (not your Friday dinner though !).  Use all your oven trays and roast vegetables all at once to cut down on utility bills and save on time.

So that's it, have a go and let me know how you get on. You can start with 2 meals per week and gradually increase to 5 meals a week. Your wallet, nerves and tummy will thank you.

Get prepping !
